SLPA eNews @ Friday May 30, 2008 - Leather Pride Week Calendar

Dear Members,
As you know, the Leather Pride Festival has kicked off, with only just over a week until Inquisition, so it's time for one last reminder about the immense program we have for you over the Festival. So here's one more look at the week ahead:

Manacle Reopening - Friday 30th

Just a reminder that Manacle, our home away from home, is officially reopening TONIGHT!!! Head down to The Clarence, at the corner of Parramatta Rd and Crystal St, Petersham, and see the newly minted OUTbar on opening night!

Combined Bike Run - Saturday 31st 9:30am

Starting at Sydney Park Under Chimney Stacks, and going to The Entrance for lunch and Pelican feeding.
We will start with Breakfast provided for a gold coin donation then the bikes will be blessed by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. We will then gear up and make our way to The Entrance for Lunch and pelican feeding at 3:30 pm.

Memorial Movie Night - Saturday 31st 7pm

Last year, the Sydney Leather Community lost a great artist, who was a dear friend to many. The documentary, Liberty In Restraint, follows the late fetish photographer, Noel Graydon, as he produced some of his most celebrated works.
Join us at the Aurora Gallery, 43 Bedford St, Newtown, for this award-winning look at Noel's artistic expression.

Fair Day - Sunday 1st June 12:30 - 6pm

A fun filled day, not to be missed, with bondage demonstrations and performances and stalls from some of the best fetish suppliers in Sydney. Returning to the Midnight Shift this Sunday from 12:30!

MCC Service - Sunday 1st June 6:30pm

On a more serious note, for those so inclined, an opportunity for a more spiritual side of the festival, with the annual Leather Service at the Metropolitan Community Church, 96 Crystal St, Petersham.

artSpace Launch - Monday 2nd June 7pm

Another staple of the Leather Pride Week diet is the taste of Sydney's newest fetish art, with the artSpace Exhibittion at the Aurora Gallery, 43 Bedford St, Newtown. Is it hot, or Is It Not? Come along to the opening and vote in the People's Choice Award, and maybe even find a piece you want to take home!

Leather Life Drawing - Tuesday 3rd June 7pm

New to Sydney Leather Pride Week and Artspace this year will be a fun and pervy life drawing night. Let loose your inner genius, let our muses guide your hands to feats of unparalleled creation. Bring along your pens, paper, paint or charcoal. Whatever you like getting your hands dirty with.

We will have live models, reflective of our world and what we like to see, and what inspires us. Wine and cheese will be provided, to get your creative juices flowing. This night requires no special skill or previous experience, just a willingness to have a go. It will be held at Aurora Gallery, 43 Bedford Street.

SM&Law - Tuesday 3rd June 6:30pm

This workshop in East Sydney will look at the legal concept of Consent and will focus on 3 actual situations where some of the people involved were charged by the Police and went to court. There will also be discussion about other legal issues that may concern members of our community. This workshop is useful for players at any level of expertise. Please email slpa.education@gmail.com to reserve a spot.

Bring 2 lengths of rope : short & long (approx 3m and 6m), wear comfy clothes and be ready to tie. Open to all comers with an interest in restraint. Attendance at Dungeon 101 is advised.

This theme for this year's Inquisition is 'Pleasuredome' and according to Sydney Leather Pride, The Dome will be for dancing and The Forum will be for prancing. There will be a walkway connecting the two venues.

SLPA WebNews - Wednesday December 19, 2007

Update from Hellfire

Hi all,

After numerous complaints about waiting time in the Hellfire queue, we have decided to raise all COMMUNITY GROUPS (SLPA, BiNSW, Dykes on Bikes and G2KU) to guaranteed $20 entry (instead of the usual $17). This is basically to speed up the Hellfire door, and reduce the delays associated with making change (and the even longer delays caused by our door bitches running out of change).

We feel that $20 still represents a reasonable discount (20% off) from the standard $25 entry that everyone else pays, and we hope to still see your members at our Club Nights.

Could you please pass on this price increase to your memberships as soon as you can, to avoid upset at the door.

Regards,
Ultra

SLPA eNews - Vale Noel Graydon

This message is passed on for friends of Noel Gredden (Graydon).

NOEL JASON GREDDON (GRAYDON)
September 16, 1971 - July 7, 2007
Noel was born Noel Jason Gredden, in 1971. Noel was a fetish photographer of great talent, whom I have known and admired for some years, although I had gotten to know him better over the last few years. I'd known him from the early days of The Hellfire Club, and have seen his work (and his personal life) progress in leaps and bounds. He was (in my opinion) a frustrated genius, but genius he was. A lovely guy, who had a great enthusiasm and an even greater talent; a zest for life, and that life being in the culture he chose as his own.

Noel was born Noel Jason Gredden. He chose Noel Graydon as his artist name because Graydon is in fact the spelling of the family's original name. Like many Australians, we are of Irish stock, and are relatively recent arrivals. The name was changed at some time, perhaps between Ireland and Australia. A simple explanation is that if you hear Graydon pronounced with a strong Irish accent, it easily becomes Gredden.

Noel was also the subject of Michael Ney's VERY well-received documentary "Liberty In Restraint". His work was quite brilliant, and he was very much looking forward to progressing on his many future projects.

Tragically, On Saturday 7th July, Noel died unexpectedly of a major heart attack caused by an arterial blood clot, following a massive asthma attack.

Noel is survived by his wife, Anette Zanker (Nettie) and two daughters, Neisha Caitlin Gredden and Zoe Saoirse Gredden. (Saoirse is pronounced Sersha, in Gaelic.)

He was 36 years old.

There will be a Sydney Memorial for him:

Sunday, 21st July, 2007
3pm-5pm
The Tap Gallery
278 Palmer Street, Darling-it-hurts

Contact: Rocky 0413 967 715

People are invited to make a contribution upon attending the venue on Sunday and the money will be counted by two people and transferred into a money order to be sent to Nettie for his daughters Neisha and Zoe.

Also if anyone can bring a plate that would be appreciated - there will be a drink on entry included.

If you have any art of Noel's that you are happy to be displayed, please attend from 2pm so it can be hung, or alternatively, make arrangements with the Tap Gallery to drop it off any time between now and Sunday.

The monthly SLPA pub night will be held at Manacle this coming Saturday night at Manacle.

This is not just a fund raiser for SLPA, but an opportunity to meet up with other leather people and support our home bar and Sydney's leather bar.

As always, on production of your membership card, you will receive $1 off the price of a glass of tap beer.

Manhole
The first of these will be on Saturday 28 July downstairs at the Oxford. This is a men only leather/fetish party, with strict dress code. As it is a private party, you will need to register by going to our web site www.sydneyleatherpride.org clicking on Manhole and entering the password "rough". Price for entry to the party is only $20 and includes your coat check.

This is an ideal way to show off your leathers and enjoy the intimacy of a smaller dance party.

It is MEN ONLY but, don't worry, a WOMEN ONLY party is being planned for later in the year.

First Aid Course
SLPA ran a First Aid Course last Saturday. There were 15 people in attendance who were trained in First Aid and will be receiving their Work Cover approved St John Ambulance Senior First Aid certificate.

The feedback from those who participated was excellent as we were able to raise issues specific to our community that might not have been raised at a general course. Thank you to those you organized it and participated in it.

If there is sufficient interest we will consider holding another course sometime in the future.

Volunteer Thank You
This past year has been a year of opportunity and achievements. We have been able to keep the organisation going as well as paying off more of the debt we still owe. SLPA could not have achieved as much as it has without the untiring efforts of our volunteers.

As a way of showing our appreciation, a Volunteers Thank you night will be held on the night of our August pub night at Manacle, 18 August. We will also be presenting the award for volunteer of the year.

Please place this night in your diary, come along and enjoy the night.

Membership renewals
It is that time of the year again; memberships are up for renewal.

Just go to the Membership page and download the Membership form. Please complete it and return it.

Your continued support is appreciated, for without our membership we would not be able to continue to operate and provide the vital services, and parties that we do to the community.

Leather Archives
As many of you will know, we lost a number of members of the leather community in the last few weeks.

I contacted the executors of Dennis Lenox's estate and have received all his leather memorabilia dating back to the early days of SPMC in the 1970's.

The leather community as been a vital party of the gay & lesbian community in Australia for many decades and we need to preserve our history.

I will be having discussions with Manacle to see if a Leather Archive can be established so that our history can be preserved. There is a Leather Archive in Chicago, we should consider whether we want to contribute our material to them or keep it in Sydney. We can discuss this at a future General Meeting.

If you have any leather memorabilia, or know of any that should be preserved, please let me know.

Doug Pereira
President

QueerScreen retrospective this week:
WOMEN IN CAGES (1971)
7PM WED 16TH MAY DENDY NEWTOWN
BOOK http://www.mca-tix.com/festival.asp?fID=28

Are we making Women In Cages sound like an academic study on the representation of oppressed minorities in 70s cinema? Well, it's not. It's more B Grade trash, but it's OH SO GOOD. This month's Retrospective film is WOMEN IN CAGES. See the queen of 70s Blaxploitation flix, Pam Grier, in her rough-as-guts, camp-as-hell role as 'Alabama', the sadistic, drug smoking lesbian warden of an all-women prison.

Alabama takes pleasure in alternately seducing and torturing the female prisoners in her gothic chamber known as 'the playpen'. For the academics, we've added a new vid to our myspace page, featuring Quentin Tarantino and Pam Grier discussing the Blaxploitation movement. Call it background research before you see the film. You can also watch the very funny tralier for Women In Cages by clicking through to: www.myspace.com/queerscreen

Don't Forget, Queer Screen Members only pay
$10 for Retrospective tickets!
TICKETS: $14.50 / $11.50 Concession / $10 QS members
BOOKINGS: http://www.queerscreen.com.au / MCA TIX 1300 306 776

QueerScreen retrospective next month:
NO SKIN OFF MY ASS (1990)
7:00PM Wednesday JUNE 20 Dendy Newtown
Dir. Bruce la Bruce, Canada/Germany, 75 min
BOOK http://www.mca-tix.com/festival.asp?fID=28

One of the first important works of the "New Queer Cinema", this is an acerbic and very witty black comedy about a gay hairdressor who picks up a young skinhead and keeps him in his apartment. The skinhead seeks advice from his sister but she is a lesbian separatist filmmaker and not much interested in what goes on between men.

Gleefully upsetting the expectations of the homosexual mainstream, No Skin Off My Ass mixes up gender, sex roles and ideology. The majority of the films of Bruce La Bruce are banned in Australia. A local distributor tried to bring in a couple of films in 1992. The censor said no to them all. Because NO SKIN OFF MY ASS was not among those submitted at that time, it is available for us to screen. All the best David Queerscreen programmer
